The Nar Phu region only opened to trekkers in 2002 and remains one of Nepal's most restricted areas. Here you'll experience authentic Tibetan-influenced culture in villages with fewer than 200 residents, some unchanged for centuries.
The government enforces strict entry regulations, including special permits, mandatory certified guides, and minimum group sizes. It’s not a place you can trek independently or without permission/preparation.
The combination of special permit requirements, challenging logistics, and remote location means only a few hundred trekkers visit each year, making this one of the most exclusive trekking experiences in the Himalayas. This limited access is what preserves the authentic culture and untouched landscapes that make the region so special.
While Nepal's popular Everest Base Camp trek reaches 5,364m, slightly higher than Kang La Pass at 5,320m, the Kang La crossing offers a more concentrated challenge and a truly rewarding high-altitude achievement.
EBC spreads its 2,800m elevation gain over 12 days with multiple acclimatization stops. Kang La Pass takes a different approach with a 1,120m ascent in a single day from Nar village at 4,200m. This makes it an exciting and focused challenge at high altitude. With proper preparation and acclimatization in the days leading up to the pass, you'll be ready to take on this sustained climb with confidence.
The terrain is far more adventurous. While EBC follows well-traveled, busy trails, Kang La takes you through unmarked, off-the-beaten-path landscapes including scree slopes and switchbacks, offering a more authentic and solitary mountain experience. The effort is continuous but immensely rewarding, with dramatic views and a strong sense of accomplishment.
Crossing Kang La Pass is a genuine highlight that showcases your high-altitude trekking ability. It's an accomplishment you'll be proud of and a memorable adventure in one of the most beautiful regions of the Himalayas.
The optimal seasons are March-May (spring) and September-November (autumn).
Spring offers clear mountain views and blooming rhododendrons, while autumn provides the most stable weather and crystal-clear visibility.
Winter (December-February) is extremely cold with potential snow blocking high passes, and summer (June-August) brings monsoon rains to lower elevations.
This Nepal trekking tour is an exciting challenge that's absolutely achievable with the right preparation! If you've done multi-day treks before, you're on the right track. If high-altitude trekking is new to you, our Pakistan trek is a great way to build your experience and confidence first.
We rate this trek 5/5 for physical demand because we want you to arrive prepared and enjoy every moment. You'll gain 4,500m in elevation over 6 trekking days, sleeping at a maximum altitude of 4,250m, and crossing the beautiful Kang La Pass at 5,320m. The good news? No technical climbing skills are required, and with proper preparation, this is totally manageable.
Daily hiking ranges from 4 to 8 hours on mountain trails. If you already have experience walking with a daypack on uneven terrain and are ready to challenge yourself at altitude, this trek is a great fit for you.
Our team are happy to help you prepare for this adventure. We can provide training plans that fit your current fitness level and schedule.
Wondering if you're ready or how to start training? Just reach out. We're here to answer questions, address any concerns, and help you figure out if this trek is right for you.
We do recommend chatting with your doctor before starting any new training program, especially if you have existing health considerations.
At high altitude, the air contains less oxygen, which can affect anyone regardless of fitness level. Common symptoms include headaches, nausea, fatigue, and difficulty sleeping - this is normal as your body adjusts.
Our itinerary is specifically designed with strategic, gradual ascents to maximize acclimatization, including a crucial rest day in Phu village at 4,080m.
Your guide will conduct regular blood oxygen level checks using a pulse oximeter to monitor how well you're adapting to the altitude. We follow strict "climb high, sleep low" principles and will never rush ascent schedules. The trek reaches a maximum sleeping altitude of 4,250m, with the Kang La Pass at 5,320m being the highest point.
Warning signs that require immediate descent include severe headaches, vomiting, confusion, or difficulty walking. Our guides are trained in altitude sickness recognition and carry emergency medication if needed and are trained in emergency evacuation procedures.
Temperatures vary dramatically by altitude and season. Expect warm days and cool nights at lower elevations, while higher altitudes can be freezing even in optimal seasons. Weather can change rapidly in the mountains, so be prepared for all conditions.
Mountain weather is unpredictable. Our experienced guides may adjust the itinerary for safety, including alternative routes or additional rest days. While we aim to complete the full program, flexibility is essential for mountain travel.
At Found Expeditions, your safety is our absolute priority throughout every stage of your adventure. We understand that mountain environments can present unexpected challenges, which is why we've developed comprehensive safety protocols refined through years of experience in the Himalayan region.
Our certified local guides are trained in wilderness first aid, high-altitude safety, and emergency response. We conduct thorough risk assessments for each activity and location, continuously monitoring weather and trail conditions to adjust plans as needed. We maintain direct communication with local authorities and ensure all equipment meets international safety standards.
We require mandatory travel insurance with high-altitude coverage, provide detailed pre-departure safety briefings, and maintain small group sizes (4-12 people) for personalized attention. Our proactive approach to safety management ensures you can focus on creating incredible memories with complete peace of mind.
Yes, comprehensive travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking (up to 6,000m) and emergency evacuation is mandatory. Your policy must cover helicopter rescue from remote areas.

I had my concerns at first about whether I could handle the difficulty of the tour because of my age. In the end, I surprised myself by completing Kang La Pass. I truly could not have done it without Bir’s careful attention and patience.
Nepal is an extraordinary place with wonderful people and culture. Most of the trek had no phone signal, so it was just you, nature, and your thoughts. In the evenings, the guides shared folk stories and local myths by the fire, which added a lovely sense of magic to the trip.

I signed up solo- everyone was so nice. The trek itself is quite physically demanding, but when I finally reached Phu and then Nar, the sense of accomplishment I experienced was just huge.would definitely love to do something like this again

as someone who’s done several Himalayan treks, this one stands out. The solitude in the nar phu valleys is unmatched and we rarely saw other trekkers. The monastery stay was amazing and although pacing was tough in parts, our guide was super attentive. I would seriously recommend this trip for those that want to escape the crowds and see a totally unique side of Nepal.

Overall this trip surpassed all my expectations-
Guides: Incredibly knowledgeable about local history, culture and mountaineering
Difficulty: the Kang La Pass was grueling but the views from 5,320m were unreal, the rest was very manageable. Accommodations: modest but comfortable
Food: Meals were home-prepared. I felt very well looked after and had an amazing time with the group
