Crossing two glacial rivers, we enter the vast Mælifellssandur black desert, where the contrast of dark volcanic sand against the lush green slopes of Mælifell Mountain creates an unforgettable landscape. A one-hour ascent to the summit offers sweeping views over Mýrdalsjökull Glacier and the surrounding wilderness. Continuing deeper into the highlands, we arrive at Strútur Mountain, where a short hike leads us to Strútslaug, a hidden geothermal hot spring offering a rare opportunity for a remote soak in pristine nature. We then cross the floodplains of Mælifellssandur to reach Rauðubotnar, a striking red crater set against dark lava fields, before following the historic Fjallabaksleið trail, once used by early Icelandic explorers. Arriving at Álftavatnskrókur Hut by evening, we settle into this tranquil valley known as "Swan Lakes", where migratory birds and untouched wilderness provide the perfect setting for a restful night on our Iceland trekking tour.

What's Included
Previous trekking experience is beneficial but not essential for this adventure.
While this trek is classified as Moderate to Challenging (4/5 physical rating), we welcome both experienced trekkers and enthusiastic beginners who are in good physical condition.
What matters most is your fitness level and determination. You should be comfortable walking for several hours with a daypack, able to handle steep and uneven terrain, and prepared for the physical demands of long distance hiking. If you regularly engage in hiking, walking, or other cardiovascular activities, you'll likely adapt well to the trekking portions.
Our certified local guides are experienced in supporting trekkers of all levels, and our small group sizes (4-12 people) ensure personalized attention and support throughout the journey.
We provide detailed pre-departure briefings and our team can offer guidance on physical preparation and training plans to help you get ready.
If you're new to trekking but excited about the challenge, this could be the perfect introduction to off the beaten path adventures.
However, if you have concerns about the physical demands, we're happy to discuss the specific requirements in more detail to help you determine if this trek is right for you.
Weather in Iceland’s highlands is highly unpredictable. You might encounter sunshine, wind, rain, and even snow all in one day. Temperatures can range from 5–15°C (40–60°F) in summer. Packing good rain gear and layers is essential.
This trek is operated between May and July, which is the optimal period for accessibility, safety, and scenic conditions in the regions included in your itinerary. Each month has distinct characteristics:
May:-
Landscape: Snowmelt begins, rivers swell, and the highlands feel raw and freshly opened after winter.
-
Conditions: Trails may still have lingering snow patches at higher elevations; river crossings can be colder and more powerful due to melting ice.
-
Weather: Daytime highs average 3–10°C (37–50°F), with strong wind a possibility. Long daylight hours (up to 20 hours) allow flexibility.
-
Experience: Fewer groups are on the trail in May, so it’s ideal for those seeking solitude and don’t mind more challenging weather.
June:-
Landscape: Trails become clearer of snow, wildflowers start to emerge, and moss and lava fields appear more vibrant.
-
Conditions: Rivers stabilize, making crossings safer and more predictable. Highlands access roads are generally open.
-
Weather: Slightly milder, 5–12°C (41–54°F) on average. Still highly variable, with potential for rain and strong winds.
-
Experience: Excellent balance of accessibility and remoteness. Days remain long (up to 18–20 hours of daylight), meaning early and late treks are possible.
July:-
Landscape: Peak season for color and accessibility — rhyolite mountains, black sand deserts, and green moss are all at their most striking.
-
Conditions: Snow is rare except on the highest ridges. Rivers are generally manageable.
-
Weather: More stable but still unpredictable — highs between 8–15°C (46–59°F).
-
Experience: Long daylight (16–18 hours) provides ample hiking time. July is the busiest of your season window, but your itinerary accesses lesser-known routes where you’ll still encounter minimal crowds compared to popular trails.

This itinerary goes far beyond the classic Golden Circle and the heavily trafficked Laugavegur trail. Its uniqueness lies in:
-
Remote access: The route ventures into Iceland’s deep highlands, an area accessible only by special 4x4 expedition vehicles and guided support.
-
Geological diversity: Trekkers experience a compressed geology course — lava fields (Laugahraun), tectonic rifts (Thingvellir), rhyolite mountains (Landmannalaugar), glacial deserts (Mælifellssandur), volcanic canyons (Eldgjá), and crater lakes (Langisjór).
-
Hidden hot springs: Opportunities to soak in remote geothermal pools like Strútslaug, which are inaccessible to most visitors.
-
Wild solitude: Unlike Iceland’s crowded day-hike trails, this itinerary takes travelers into areas with minimal infrastructure and few other groups, providing a true wilderness immersion.
-
Cultural integration: The route overlays with historic Fjallabaksleið trails once used by early Icelandic explorers, adding cultural resonance to the landscape experience.
In essence, this trek combines technical remoteness, geological spectacle, and cultural history, creating a richer and more varied experience than Iceland’s mainstream treks.
-
The Landmannalaugar–Þórsmörk Laugavegur trail is Iceland’s most famous trek, typically 55 km over 4 days, but it has become increasingly crowded and commercialized. Key differences with this itinerary include:
-
Scope: This trek spans 9 days with 6 trekking days, covering a broader sweep of Iceland’s interior, not just the Laugavegur corridor.
-
Crowds: The Laugavegur sees hundreds of trekkers per day in summer, with huts booking up months in advance. This itinerary accesses lesser-known trails and valleys, providing solitude.
-
Terrain: While both routes feature rhyolite mountains and lava fields, this itinerary adds Eldgjá Canyon, Lake Langisjór, Mælifellssandur black desert, and Peak Sveinstindur, landscapes not part of the classic Laugavegur.
-
Logistics: This trek includes support vehicles for luggage, hot spring detours, and historic trail segments that aren’t logistically feasible for independent hikers.
Think of the Laugavegur as Iceland’s “highway trek” and this route as its off-the-map, advanced expedition alternative.
